How do you, NTT Faculty, pay your rent? - ProfHacker - The ...

In February of this year, Josh Boldt, a Writing Instructor and EdTech Consultant at the University of Georgia, asked his blog?s readership to contribute to a crowdsourced document on adjunct labor working conditions in the United States, this in response to Michael B?rub??s call, as the new president of the Modern Language Association, to address adjunct labor practices and conditions. This simple request exploded across social media resulting in thousands of people contributing to a current profile of adjunct labor in the United States.? This simple document has morphed into The Adjunct Project, a place that, according to Boldt, promotes transparency in higher education employment practices, provides a quick reference for parents and teachers (et al) to gauge how much value a college or university places on education and human rights, recognizes schools that are treating faculty well (or poorly), and connects adjunct professors (and others) who are interested in ?saving American higher education.? All this is fine and good, as we in higher ed need to rethink how we compensate non-tenure track faculty.? (For added information, see B?rub??s article reprinted from the MLA Newsletter, ?What We Can (and Can?t) Do?and What We Have (and Haven?t) Done? and other articles he?s penned at?Crooked Timber that concern non-tenure track faculty issues: ?More About Adjuncts,? and ?Still More About Adjuncts.?)

According to The Adjunct Project spreadsheet, the compensation that most NTT faculty receive for their work is not a living wage, as the average pay per course per semester is approximately $2,500. ?At the time I wrote this article, the lowest pay per course per semester amount on the spreadsheet was $714, the highest $7,000. The average was $2,000 to $3,000 per course per semester. Note that these rates span all types of institutions (public and private, large and small, profit and nonprofit) and cover a wide array of disciplines.? The spreadsheet provides a fascinating read about these salaries, benefits that some universities or colleges include (most do not), and other quirks of specific institutions.? (The Living Wage Calculator, created at Penn State, is another helpful tool to determine if what we pay NTT faculty is, in fact, a living wage for our specific geographic area.)

It?s interesting to think about these numbers.? If a non-tenure track faculty member, for example, teaches three sections of a course (the maximum that a part-time faculty member can teach at many institutions) and each course pays $2,000, this faculty member earns $6,000 for a semester?s worth of teaching, maybe 15 or 16 weeks on a semester system.? This is an average of $375 a week, and depending on the number of hours this faculty member spends with course preparation, teaching, grading, and student conferencing, this professor?s hourly rate is often below the national minimum wage.? It?s important to keep in mind that this rate does not usually include any kind of health insurance or retirement benefits.

The Adjunct Project and the data it provides is a good place to start conversations about how the higher education system can change as it relates to non-tenure track faculty.? Michael B?rub?, other national leaders, provosts, deans, department chairs, and in some cases, state governments have made statements defining what a ?fair wage? is for non-tenure track faculty. Regardless of these various definitions, however, there remains an important question: How do you pay your rent on so little per month? (And your student loans, car payment, child care, health coverage, or any other types of expenses you might have).

This is a serious question. In some cases, 50 percent or more of a university?s faculty are part-time, and these folks are living on sometimes less-than-minimum-wage earnings, accruing no benefits or retirement.? Since there are so many people underemployed in this manner, maybe we can share our survival tips.

  • If your current part-time salary is below ?standard? for your area, how do you (or do you) supplement your income?
  • Do you teach at multiple colleges or universities? (Does your primary university/college know this and how do they respond?? Some employers enforce noncompeting agreements and ask that you not ?moonlight? in a similar fields/professions.)
  • If so, how do you manage (effectively teach and assess) 6 or 7 or 8 sections of courses each term?
  • Do you have a non-competing job, full- or part-time outside of higher ed? (e.g. in business, medicine, retail, food service, construction, etc.?)
  • Do you have a partner who contributes to your financial solvency?
  • Do your parents or other family members assist you, or do you have a roommate (or several)?
  • Do you receive government / community / church assistance?
  • In what ways do you minimize your expenses so that the salary you do receive from universities and colleges is enough to sustain you?

Please leave your comments and suggestions below. Because this topic is a sensitive one, anonymity might be preferable for commenters, which is fine.? Keep in mind ProfHacker?s commenting and community guidelines, though. We want thoughtful and considered comments to these important questions.

Man-made noise can affect plants, as well as animals

A new study concludes that noise from humans can have an effect on plant life, in addition to wildlife.

Mounting evidence shows that noise from traffic, oil drilling, Navy sonar and other technology can make nearby animals scatter or change their behavior it.

New research takes a broader perspective and asks: How does noise affect natural communities? The results indicate that noise has the potential to trigger cascading effects that could alter the structure of these communities, known as ecosystems.

In nature, it's unusual for one factor to change in isolation; a change in one animal's behavior, for example, will likely have ripple effects on whatever it eats and whatever eats it.

To see what was happening further down the line, researchers looked at pollination and seedling establishment of plants growing near natural gas wells in Rattlesnake Canyon Habitat Management Area in northwestern New Mexico.?

Compressors running nonstop at the wells generate a droning roar, which at the study sites could be compared with the sound of a lower-pitched vacuum cleaner several feet away, said lead researcher Clinton Francis, postdoctoral fellow at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in North Carolina.

The researchers compared these sites to others located farther away, where noise consisted of an occasional bird call or, more rarely, a distant plane or car, Francis told LiveScience in an email. [Shhh! 10 Ways to Quiet National Parks]

Not all species lose out because of human noise ? some can benefit ? but if any play important ecosystem roles, such as pollinating plants, dispersing seeds or preying on other species, the effects of noise could trickle down to other members of the community, according to Francis.

To see how noise at the New Mexico wells affected pollination, the researchers put out artificial flowers resembling a common flower, the scarlet gilia, pollinated by black-chinned hummingbirds in both types of sites. They found that the hummingbird visits were five times more common at the noisy sites, and more pollen was also transferred among fake flowers at the noisy sites ? good news for flowers at noisy sites.

This wasn't a surprise, as previous research has shown that the hummingbirds actually prefer noisy sites; this may be because their predators, western scrub jays that eat the hummingbirds' nestlings, flee human noise, Francis and colleagues suggest.

When looking at how noise changed the fate of seeds from one of the dominant trees in the ecosystem, pi?on pines, the researchers found evidence of the opposite effect. Seedlings at quiet sites were four times more abundant than at noisy ones. The team attributes this to differences in the animals picking up the seeds.

Western scrub jays store the seeds they find for later meals, but many of these seeds go unrecovered and germinate, giving the plants an opportunity to spread. The noise-sensitive scrub jays only showed up at the quiet sites. Meanwhile, mice, which are more inclined to eat the seeds, showed up more frequently at the noisy sites ? bad news for pi?on pines at noisy sites.

Over the long term, this dynamic could mean fewer pi?on pines in noisy areas. This change, too, would ripple out, since hundreds of species ? fungi, insects, plants, mammals and birds ? are closely associated with the pines, Francis said.

"The problem is that the full effects of noise exposure may not be felt by the ecosystem for many decades, perhaps even long after gas wells are gone," Francis told LiveScience in an email, explaining that the pines and the other dominant tree, the Utah juniper, grow slowly and live long lives.

Francis expects similar, indirect effects in ecosystems located at other noisy locations.

The research appears in the March 21 issue of the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

US unemployment aid applications hit 4-year low

(AP) ? The number of people seeking U.S. unemployment aid fell to a four-year low last week, bolstering the view that the job market is strengthening.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications dropped 5,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000. That's the lowest level since March 2008, just months into the Great Recession. The four-week average of applications, a less volatile measure, dipped to 355,000, matching a four-year low.

Applications have steadily declined since last fall. The drop has coincided with the best three months of hiring in two years. From December through February, employers added an average of 245,000 jobs per month. That's pushed down the unemployment rate to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years.

The report suggests that employers added a similar level of jobs this month. This week's figures cover the same week that the Labor Department surveys companies about hiring in March. Applications are slightly lower this week than in February's survey week, which points to more job growth.

"U.S. employment growth looks to have continued in March at a respectable pace," Jennifer Lee, an economist at BMO Capital Markets.

Companies are hiring more because the economy is picking up. The economy grew at an annual rate of 3 percent in the final three months of last year. That was better than the 1.7 percent rate in the previous quarter.

There are other signs the economy is steadily recovering. Consumers are more confident and have stepped up spending. Auto sales are rising. Even the battered housing market is showing signs of improving.

January and February comprised the best winter for sales of previously occupied homes in five years, according to figures released Wednesday by the National Association of Realtors. January sales were the most since May 2010, the final month that a federal tax credit for home buyers was available. Sales dipped in February but were still 13 percent higher than six months earlier.

Developers are even seeking to build more homes. Requests for permits to build single-family homes and apartments rose 5 percent last month. That brought the annual rate for permits to the highest since October 2008, though they are still running at about half the rate of a healthy market.

The number of people receiving unemployment aid fell. Nearly 7.3 million people received benefits in the week ending March 3, the latest data available. That's about 140,000 fewer than the previous week.

One concern is that rising gas prices will force consumers to cut back on discretionary spending. That could weigh on economic growth and slow hiring. The Federal Reserve says it expects oil and gas prices to temporarily boost inflation but predicts that longer-term inflation should remain stable.

The job market still has a ways to go to fully recover from the Great Recession. More than 12.8 million people remain unemployed and the economy still has 5 million fewer jobs than before the downturn.

But the more robust job market has caused some so-called "discouraged workers" to start looking again. The work force rose by nearly a half-million in February.

Dental Assistant Resumes:Make Your Cover Letter Do its Job, Get ...

Discover the best resume cover letter advice in order to get hired. Nowadays it?s very difficult to get the job you want. This is why you need a professional cover letter. Having just a Curriculum Vitae (CV), also known as a resume, might not be enough to convince people that you are the right person for the job.

The correct solution requires the students to think creatively: Empty the box of tacks and use it as a candleholder. The solution is considered a measure of ?insight creativity? because it involves making the ?aha!? discovery that the box is not just a repository for your tools but a tool itself. The researchers found that the longer students had spent living abroad, the more likely they were to use the box as a candleholder. In fact, 60% of students who had previously lived abroad solved the problem compared with 42% of students who hadn?t lived abroad. Interestingly, time spent merely traveling abroad had no effect on creativity. It was important to have actually lived abroad, immersing yourself in the local culture either through work, study, volunteering or all three.

Your cover letter is evidence that you have ?excellent written communication skills?. Prove it.Research the company well enough that you can note something in your cover letter that is not well known, not mentioned in the job description and proves you have taken time, serious time to learn about them, their products and services.

A resume or a cover letter can give you better opportunity to market yourself. This will give you the chance to present your skills and goals into a better context. Let them know that you have big ambitions. They will like the fact that you are eager to work hard and get to a higher professional level. You should make a cover letter especially when you are sending a CV to a recruitment agency. This way they will know what kind of work you are looking for. A letter can be useful when you are enquiring about job vacancies to an employer.

When I started my first job in Seoul, I realized that if I was going to find my way around the city I had to learn to read the Korean alphabet and speak a few basic phrases if I ever wanted to leave the neighborhood where I lived. The only ways to get around in the area at that time were by bus and taxi. The buses had no signs in English and I hadn?t run into any taxi drivers who spoke much of the language. Although I was hesitant to do it, not sure how I would be perceived, I asked one of my Korean co-workers to give me a crash course in the language. Then I forced myself to get out of my apartment on the weekends and after work. I made an effort to see theDental Assistant Resumes city and to use my newly acquired (and fairly awkward) language skills. Skills I never would have acquired had I stayed home.
